Jackson Hole Centennial

Jackson Hole Centennial Celebration

Jackson Hole is looking pretty darn good for turning 100, don’t ya think! Come out and celebrate this amazing and rugged town with many exciting events planned throughout the year to commemorate this historic centennial event.

History

As legend has it Jackson Hole became incorporated as a town solely to collect a $1,200 liquor license fee from an illegal saloon. If it became a town they could collect the licensing fee from the saloon and keep the money locally rather then sending it to Kemmerer. The only problem was they needed 150 residents to become a town and the elk far out unnumbered the townsfolk in 1914. Town leaders set the town’s boundaries to incorporate everyone they could find in the local area, but still came up one name short. Luckily, a woman was pregnant and she named her baby to be on the spot and its name was added to the list. With a vote of 48 in favor and 21 against the resolution to incorporate was passed and the liquor license fee was collected. The rest as they say is town history.

How to Celebrate

Jackson Hole Centennial logoWith past successful and fun events, such as the kick off party and community picnic, it all leads up to the grand celebration on Friday, September 19th festivities begin sharply at 1:22 pm on Friday in what is sure to be a jam-packed weekend of everything Jackson.

For some local history of Jackson Hole check out the event The Mosely/Hardeman Barn: A Treasure in Plain Sight on Friday, September 19th Center for the Arts. The Center for the Arts is also presenting a program entitled Plain Sight. Details are currently under wraps but check out their website, jhcenterforarts.org, for forthcoming information about these and other events.

Interested in the town’s history with quilting then come see the Quilting Demonstration at the historic Miller House on Saturday, September 20th on the National Elk Refuge the Miller House is just 3⁄4 miles north of the Elk Refuge entrance on East Broadway Avenue.

Dust off your dancing shoes and get ready for a night of revelry as The Centennial Gala kicks off Saturday, September 20th information contact the JH Chamber of Commerce at (307) 733-3316. Get your hands on some Jackson Hole Centennial history and buy a limited edition Centennial Silver Coin. It beats waiting 100 years to grab a silver coin at the bicentennial. Only 500 have been minted and they’re sure to become a collector’s item. Or grab something you can wear to say you were there at this special event with a keepsake t-shirt or hat. Even better yet buy a centennial pint glass and literally raise a glass to this historic town and event. To find out where to buy these one of a kind items contact the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce at (307) 733-3316.

Other ways for everyone to celebrate the town we all love is to share your Jackson Hole memories and photos on Facebook with the Jackson, Wyoming Centennial Celebration page. Grand Teton National Park is the quieter park of the two and offers majestic views of the Teton mountain range from just about anywhere in the park. In both parks you’ll have a ton of opportunities to view wildlife, just make sure you watch them safely from a distance.

Teton County Fair carnival ride

Teton County Fair 2014

Sure barbecues and lemonade bring to mind the summer season, but nothing quite says summer out West in America like all the fun to be had at the Teton County Fair in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Billed as “Horns & Hides, Laughs & Rides” the Fair takes over Jackson for ten fun-filled days and nights from July 18th – July 27.

 Teton County Fair Annual Events

Teton Count Fair Pig WrestlingPig wrestling is an annual tradition in Jackson Hole and it’s a fun spectator sport. Watch as different teams and ages try to catch a slippery pig in the mud. Sounds easy enough, but it’s not as hijinks are sure to ensue. This event will provide laughs when it’s held Thursday, July 24th at 7pm. Tickets are $10 to $15, but are really priceless because you aren’t the one getting covered in mud from head to toe.

Jackson Hole RodeoThe Jackson Hole Rodeo, where the West is still wild, is an integral part of this great summer tradition. Catch all the excitement from the grandstands on Saturday, July 23rd at 8pm. They have cowboys and cowgirls, clowns, bulls, broncs, and more. It’s sure to be a fun filled evening for the family taking in all the competition of the old west. Tickets run $10 to $20.

Teton Count Fair Figure 8 RacesYou’ve seen all the livestock, now be amazed by the horsepower and excitement of the Figure 8 Races. Brave, daring, and maybe a bit crazy, these drivers navigate a figure 8 track that intersects at the crossover. Big time crashes are par for the course and to be expected. See the sparks and dust fly on Sunday, July 27th at 7pm. Tickets for one of the biggest events of the Fair are $10 to $20.

After you’ve done all that people (and livestock) watching get in on the action yourself and enjoy the carnival rides at the Teton County Fair. From the tame to the gripping a fair just isn’t a fair without them. If you are all about lapping the rides and want the ultimate riding experience grab a Mega Pass for $100 and enjoy any ride, any time the rides are running. Another great option if you just want to hit up the rides for a bit is to buy a 4-hour pass for $18. Or just try out a few of the ones you really want and pay per ride.

Free Things to Do at the Teton County Fair

The Teton County Fair offers a ton of free things to do as well. Check out an entertaining and educational rattlesnake show by none other than Rattlesnake Dave. In the mood to laugh make sure to catch Matt Baker’s comedy act. There is also a free juggling act, a clown to delight the children, and even a ventriloquist. You’ve seen plenty of animals, now the kids can get a chance to interact with them as well at the Freckle Farm Petting Zoo.

The Teton County Fair also offers up some free music concerts to set the mood for the night. The Black Lillies and Craig Campbell perform at Snow King Ball Park Friday, July 25th at 5:30pm.

This year’s Fair is filled with so many fun and exciting options to do, consider yourself lucky that it runs for ten nights. With plenty of tasty treats as well as livestock competitions and numerous exhibits to see you just may have to go back again and again to cram it all in.

The weather has been beautiful; so grab your hiking shoes, a pack, your family, and head into Grand Teton National Park for a fun, family friendly Taggart Lake hike.

Getting to Taggart Lake hike

Taggart Lake hike
View from Tagart Lake. From left to right; Middle Teton, Grand Teton, Mnt Owen, Teewinot

A seven-day entrance pass to Grand Teton National Park costs $25 per vehicle. Once in the Park a good first stop is the Craig Thomas Visitor Center to get current updates, information, and the chance to talk to Rangers. To get to the Taggart Lake hike trailhead just drive 2.5 miles north on the Teton Park Road to the Taggart Creek parking lot. There are bathrooms at the trailhead, but keep in mind there are none on the hike or at the lake. The hike is relatively easy, low in elevation, and best for kids four and older who can walk the trail themselves.

On the Taggart Lake Hike

Taggart Lake
A view of the Grand Teton from the first bridge crossing on the Tagart Lake hike

Once on the trail there will be plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing with your best bets being bird watching. The trail gets a fair amount of traffic, so bears are not expected, but it’s still best to pack bear spray and be bear aware. Make sure to keep all food stored away and pack out all food and trash.

Although, you’ll be walking through dense forest a decent portion of the trail is open meadows and sees a fair amount of sun, so make sure you bring and apply sunscreen frequently throughout the day.  As the heat increases feel free to cool off or at least dip your feet in the glacial waters of the lake, which will be sure to cool you off.

Either lake makes a great destination to sit, relax, have a family picnic, and refuel after all that walking. It’s a 3 mile round trip to Taggart Lake and about another 1.5 miles to Bradley Lake. Set aside around 2-4 hours for the hike. Enjoy being on the trail with your family and taking in the scenic views that Grand Teton National Park has to offer. The Grand Teton and Teewinot Mountain will always be visible along the hike and at a certain section you will even get a glimpse of  Snow King Mountain back in Jackson. To ensure a great day bring plenty of water, food, a hat, sunscreen, extra layers, rain gear, and bug and bear spray.  Now stop reading this and contact Jackson Hole Reservations today to plan your adventure to the majestic Grand Teton National Park.

Introducing our New Blog

Howdy folks! We are excited to introduce our new blog at Jackson Hole Reservations. We felt there was no better place to start than by sharing a brief interview with Ronald Miller, the founder of Jackson Hole Reservations. Enjoy.

Question: When was Jackson Hole Reservations founded and what does it do?
Answer: Jackson Hole Reservations was started in 1997. We started as a small travel agency and became the largest wholesaler of lodging reservations in Jackson Hole within 5 years. We assist tourists and locals with arranging rental condos, homes, or hotels available within the area.

Question: How did you get into this line of business?
Answer: I wanted to start a Jackson Hole property management company and the Central Reservations company that existed at that time would not wholesale our properties and told me I would fail if I started in the business. Lucky for me I did not listen to those voices.

Question: Why Jackson Hole?
Answer: I came to Jackson Hole in my 20’s as a ski bum and loved riding the Jackson Hole tram every day and skiing steep and deep vertical terrain. I had 4 children and had to go to work and get OFF the tram and start a business.

Question: Is Jackson Hole Reservations one of the pioneers in the area?
Answer: Yes, we developed one of the first organized websites with our jacksonhole.net site which still today dominates for viewer traffic in the area of Central Reservation for Jackson Hole.

Question: What are the plans for the future of the company?
Answer: I plan to keep the business in the family and to offer family members ownership positions in the company.

Question: Do you offer reservations services in other areas?
Answer: Yes, in Park City, Utah and Aspen and Snowmass, Colorado.

Question: Whats been the most rewarding experience with your business?
Answer: Growing a strong cash flowing company and watching it grow as a family business to something great and good for the community as well.

Thank you for reading our first blog entry. Please follow our blog to stay up to date with local happenings, reviews about activities, and other interesting postings about Jackson Hole.
