Packing Tips: Ski Vacation to Jackson Hole Wyoming

After you have pressed submit on your travel plans to Jackson Hole Wyoming all that is left is to obsessively check the weather every two minutes until you board your flight and to pack for the winter adventure. You should bring what you need to be comfortable on and off the slopes, but don’t worry, if you forget to pack anything you’ll be surrounded by amazing ski and board shops. You may just want to forget a few things on purpose, so you can outfit yourself in some fresh new mountain gear.

On the Mountain

It depends where you are visiting from, but there is a pretty solid chance that Jackson Hole Wyoming  will be colder and have significant more snow than where you are coming from. High-pressure weather tends to be easier to predict than low, but as any weather person will tell you it can all be hard to predict, so to account for that you’ll want to dress in layers for varying temperatures. Pack some quality base and mid layers (top and bottom) that wick moisture and are antimicrobial to keep you dry and fresh on the mountain. Bring a versatile insulator jacket (down or synthetic) for added warmth and layer a waterproof shell on top. Bonus points if your shell has zip pits or other venting, so you can adjust your core’s thermostat when you are exerting yourself and need to cool off on the lift back up. It’s not necessary but you may want to pack another jacket as a backup or to sport around town so you don’t scream tourist with your ski pass hanging off your zipper. Not, that there’s anything wrong with it, but it’s just a telltale sign if you are trying to pass as a local. Look for a performance shell that is waterproof or repels water with a high rating, since this is essentially the armor of your outerwear. You’ll also want a solid pair of snow pants to keep you dry when sitting on the lift. If you are a boarder you’ll probably spend a great deal of your day sitting in the snow, so Gore-Tex or some other high end fabric is a great call. You’ll also need gloves or mittens whichever your preference and maybe a back up pair in case they get wet. Don’t worry the resort and Mother Nature will provide the snow.

Other essentials:

• helmet (protect your head, it’s the only one you’ve got)
• goggles (spare lenses for different conditions)
• poles
• ski socks, (multiple pairs)
• face mask / neck warmer
• hand warmers / boot warmers
• goggle cloth (to clean goggles if they get washed out in a yard sale fall or all that heavy snow falling, yeah probably the heavy snow)
• contacts (better to see you with, my mountain)
• avalanche gear (beacon, shovel, probe if heading out the gates)
• sunscreen (the sun is intense at this altitude, so protect your skin)
• lip balm
• phone (download any applicable apps for the resort, such as trail map or something to measure all that vert you are racking up)
• backpack (hydration packs make staying hydrated on the go easy, also stock with some mountain snacks to keep you going)
• GoPro (to record all that epic footage)

Off the Mountain

Unfortunately the resort closes at 4pm, so unless you hit up Snow King for a day night, double-header you’ll be spending some time out of your ski or snowboard boots and will want to be comfortable and possibly even stylish. Again layers are a good call and staying warm is still the name of the game. A good pair of water resistant boots with good traction will get you where you need to get to, whether that’s the bar or some much needed nourishment after leaving all those calories behind on the mountain. A winter hat that keeps your head warm, dry, and stylish is pretty much worth its weight in gold. Sunglasses are standard issue in a mountain town and will reduce unwanted wrinkles from constant squinting at the sun’s rays. Like the rest of the world, jeans are the dress code of choice for just about any establishment you could frequent in this relaxed western paradise.

Other essentials:

• swimsuit (you’ll want to soak your worked muscles in the hot tub and or pool, your body will thank you)
• medications (pack what you need)
• toiletries
• cables and chargers for electronic gear (the cold can drain batteries quicker)
• camera (it’s pretty darn scenic in these parts)
• sleepwear
• scarf
• sweaters
• drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness

Backcountry Safety

Jackson Hole Backcountry Safety

Everyone wants to ski and ride powder in the winter and plenty of it exists out of the gates in the side-country and backcountry of Jackson Hole. Those skiers and riders who are willing to earn their turns sans chairlift can find powder stashes long after the last storm and when the resort seems skied out. If you head into the backcountry be prepared and play it safe, since the backcountry is not avalanche patrolled like inbounds terrain at the resort.  Venturing out and exploring may just be the best day of your season, but keep in mind that you are ultimately responsible for the well being of yourself and your party and the goal is to have fun and return safely at the end of the day.  Be prepared before you go.

Unlike simply showing up to the resort and buying a pass at the ticket window you’ll have to do some prep work before you head out the gates at the resort, or venture up Teton Pass, or into Grand Teton National Park. Ideally you have taken an avalanche course or two. If you haven’t taken one yet don’t worry there are plenty of options to take one in the Tetons with such reputable places as Jackson Hole Mountain Guides, American Avalanche Institute, or Exum Mountain Guides. Do not venture out into the backcountry alone.  A ski buddy or a small group of experienced skiers and riders who are familiar with the terrain is ideal for a day in the backcountry. Make sure you check current avalanche conditions at jhavalanche.org as well as the projected weather for the day.

Jackson Hole Backcountry

Your brand new fancy pack is not just for toting your skis or board on the boot pack climbs, but should be stocked full of gear and provisions that you’ll need to be comfortable for the afternoon or would need if an emergency arises. At a minimum you’ll need a transceiver and know how to use it as well as an avalanche shovel, and a probe. Make sure you bring plenty of water and food because there are no 7-11s where you are headed. Bring extra layers of clothing in case you get cold and a spare set of gloves, a medical kit for emergencies and a lighter in case you need to start a fire to keep warm. Bring your cellphone to call for help if needed, but keep in mind cell service may be spotty or unreliable. AvaLungs or an avalanche airbag are other valuable items to consider having in your gear arsenal. A good rule of thumb is to bring what you think you would need to be comfortable if you needed to spend the night in the backcountry if something happened. It’s also a good idea to let someone know where you are headed.

Like other sports there is backcountry etiquette, be mindful of other skiers you encounter and don’t drop in on them when they are exposed in possible avalanche terrain. It’s kind of like golf; let the group ahead of you have the right of way. When you are skiing in your group and in an exposed area ski one at a time and have an exit strategy in mind if an avalanche were to be triggered. Also identify possible hazards such as rocks, trees, or cliffs below you.

Observe the conditions and pay attention to your surroundings. Listen for sounds in changes in the snowpack and look for clues to the stability of the slope that you are skiing, such as digging a pit to check the stability of the snow or performing a snow cut before you ski that wide-open powder bowl. Also look for visual clues to how the snow appears and keep in mind of rapid warm ups in temperatures that will affect snow stability. Try and have a good idea of where you are at all times in case you had to explain your position to an emergency responder. Discuss options and conditions among your group and make informed decisions before you drop in. Just because you planned to ski a certain route doesn’t mean it’s the right day to do it. It’s better to turn away and ski it another day if you are adding up the signs you observe and they point to no.

Being in the backcountry is a different experience than simply lapping vertical at the resort. The vibe in the Jackson Hole backcountry is more tranquil and will feel reminiscent of enjoying a peaceful hike in the summer time, but the best part is you get to ski or ride down after all that hard work. Just be safe, mitigate risk and enjoy the powder ride.

Top 10 Jackson Hole Winter Activities

Winter in Jackson Hole is epic, period! The Tetons are covered in fresh snow and everyday feels like a snow day off from school. Everyone just wants to get outside and play in the powder. Here’s your list of can’t miss Jackson Hole winter activities to do when visiting this western winter wonderland, so make time for as many as you can. Don’t worry it will be snowing soon enough.

10) Ice Skating on the Town Square

It might not be famed Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, but with views of a lit up Snow King Mountain and way less crowded, it might just be better. So grab your skates or rent them there and skate around the Town Square. If you get cold or tired take a break with some hot chocolate and enjoy the live music.

9) Winter Bike Tours

Bust out the fat bikes and hit the snow-covered road. Biking isn’t just a summer sport any more; with over sized tires, wide rims, and frames with large forks, fat bikes are now the most efficient mode of travel on snow (sorry skiers). There are plenty of fat bike tour packages to choose from that include scenic trails in Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge. Get more info on bike tours at www.tetonmtbike.com or stop in at any number of bike shops in the valley.

8) Snow King Mountain

Don’t overlook the local town hill, Snow King Mountain, if you are staying in town. Although much smaller than Jackson Hole or Grand Targhee it still offers plenty of steep and mellow terrain. It’s also your one and only place to get your night skiing fix in the area if you somehow didn’t get enough during the day. And it always seems like you go faster down the hill at night.

7) Sled Dog Tours

Here’s your chance to see what it’s like to be in the legendary Iditarod Sled Dog Race for a day. Luckily, you won’t exactly be roughing it as you’ll be served a hearty lunch and get a chance to take a dip in the warm and inviting waters of Granite Hot Springs (full day tour only). Half-day tours hit the same scenic trail, but don’t offer lunch or a hot spring dip. Don’t worry you’ll still get served a hot beverage and soup. You can even drive a team of dogs if you want or simply sit back and enjoy the ride.

6) Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is quite possibly the most tranquil way to enjoy all that this valley has to offer in winter. Strap some snowshoes to your feet and get out into Grand Teton National Park and do some exploring. Guided tours from local outfitters are available as well if you don’t want to rough it alone. Look for animals and just get away from it all on a blue bird day in the mountains of Jackson Hole. Enjoy the solitude of this amazing place and bond with the family while breaking trail.

5) Snow Coach

The roads in Yellowstone might be closed but you can still check out all the wildlife and even Old Faithful via a breathtaking Snow Coach tour of the Park. Enjoy the solitude of beautiful Yellowstone in winter in a climate controlled Snow Coach and have the Park practically to yourself. Your guided group will make several stops along the way at scenic and geothermal hotspots. Various companies offer all types of packages, so check online to see what trip works best for you.

4) Grand Targhee Resort

Looking for a change of pace head over Teton Pass into Idaho and then back into Wyoming and check out Grand Targhee, which gets so much powder they only make snow on the beginner runs. Targhee, although not as big as Jackson Hole Mountain Resort still offers plenty of beginner, intermediate, and advanced terrain to wear out any skier or rider. Lift lines are pretty much nonexistent and powder from storms lasts for days.

3) Snowmobiling

Jackson is a premier destination for snowmobiling in the country. The opportunities are basically endless for those wishing to get out there and rip some pow on their sleds. You really can’t wrong, with chances to ride pow or groomed trails in Togowtee, Grand Teton, or Yellowstone National Park. Make sure to dress warmly in winter clothing and let your snowmobile company outfit you with the rest of the essential gear. Bring a camera to capture all the amazing wildlife and scenery you’ll be cruising by. Hands down one of the best ways to see Jackson Hole in winter.

2) Elk Refuge Sleigh Ride

Pretty much a must on your Jackson Hole winter bucket list. You’re also guaranteed to get up close and personal and see some real western wildlife. Your horse drawn sleigh driver also pulls double duty as your knowledgeable guide and can fill you in the history of the National Elk Refuge. It’s pretty much an epic experience to get out into the herd and observe them feeding and hanging out. Dress warm as weather conditions vary and feel free to take advantage of the blankets that are provided if you get chilled. Rides are $19 for adults and $15 for children.

1) Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Epic mountain, check. Tons of pow, check. Your checklist is essentially complete as you are about to ride some of the best terrain of your dreams. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is the big one and boasts some of the longest continuous vertical in the lower 48. Basically everything you could ever ask for in a ski resort is waiting just under your ski tips. A must is a ride to the top of Rendezvous Bowl via the tram, but there are also plenty of powder stashes and runs accessible from the gondola. Skiing and riding at it’s finest, with plenty of readily accessible backcountry. There’s Jackson and then there is everything else.

8) Nani’s Ristorante & Bar

This tasty Italian restaurant is always a great choice for a meal or a casual drink, but come Thursday the action kicks into gear as tables are cleared for dancing and space is made for local legend DJ Vert-One to take over the joint. From restaurant to instant party is pretty much the script every Thursday. Bring your dancing shoes and get funky with it.

7) Q Roadhouse and Brewing Co.

The Q started as a down home barbecue joint, but has since evolved into a brewpub as well, as they brew some of the best beer in the Valley with the awards to prove it. They brew it all and a lot of them pack a punch at 7%, 8%, and 9%. Happy hour runs daily from 5-6 pm and they often have live music. Don’t worry they have plenty of amazing food to go with all those beers and spirits if you get hungry.

6) The Virginian Saloon

Mingle with locals, bikers, cowboys; everyone is welcome when you enter through the swinging doors of the Virginian Saloon. Plenty of big screen TV’s and pool tables to keep you occupied as well as a dance floor that gets bumping when DJ’s are spinning or bands are playing. The Virginian is truly a one of a kind western saloon in Jackson Hole.

5) The Stagecoach Bar

A Jackson favorite since 1942, the ‘Coach as it’s known to locals is always a fun night out in the Tetons. Just out of town in Wilson, at the bottom of Teton Pass, the Stagecoach is the spot to enjoy a local beer, play pool, darts, or even beach volleyball. Thursday Disco Nights are always packed at the ‘Coach as the scene is set with a soundtrack of tunes from the 70’s and 80’s. All ladies get their first drink free and there are complimentary taxi rides at the end of the night to get you home safely. Or check out Sunday Church with the Stagecoach band from 6pm -10pm. The band’s only been playing every Sunday for over 40 years.

 4) Town Square Tavern

Right on the square as the name implies the Tavern offers just about everything you need for a night out. Take one part live music, one part sports bar, and one part restaurant and liquor store, shake it all up and you have got one epic evening at the Town Square Tavern. It’s a great place to watch the game with your buddies. Or stop in on another night as the Tavern morphs into the one of the best spots in town to see live music. You can catch everything from local music, DJ’s, and even national touring acts.

 3) The Silver Dollar

At over seventy years old, get a glimpse of how Jackson used to be back in the day when you step into this western watering hole. After all that time travelling you’re sure to be thirsty so grab a seat at the famous Silver Dollar topped bar and have a drink. With over 2,000 uncirculated 1921 Morgan Silver Dollars embedded in the bar top, go ahead try and count em, that’s how this institution got its name. Catch the free live music every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday for some Americana, Country, Bluegrass, or Rock.

 2) The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

You can’t really come to Jackson and not go there. If you want the full cowboy experience, look no further than the famous Million Dolllar Cowboy Bar right on the town square. Saunter in through the door like it’s still the old west, leave your horse outside, and sit on one of the iconic saddle seats at the bar. They won’t put the bottle down in front of you like they used to do in the old west, but they’ve got whiskey by the barrels, literally, and just about anything else that could quench your thirst from roughing it on the trail all day. The theme wouldn’t be complete without their legendary Western music and crowded dance floor. Make sure you buy a t-shirt on the way out, to wear with pride at lower elevations.

 1) The Rose

The Rose, one of the latest and trendiest additions to the Jackson Hole nightlife scene, features an inspired and inventive cocktail menu, that leaves you feeling like you are in another city or a city for that matter. The Rose, partnered with the famed Lower East Side bar Death + Company, is the reason for the big city feel. It sports an urban décor that boldly states a classic cocktail lounge look of yesteryear, and a drink menu that proudly demonstrates a craftsmanship and invention light years beyond the pedestrian mixed drink. It’s pretty much where all the cool kids are hanging out these days, when they aren’t in New York.

Top 10 Jackson Hole Breakfasts

Everybody knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but not everyone knows where to hit up the tastiest spot to kick start your day in Jackson Hole. Put down that muffin from your hotel lobby and head straight to one of these fine establishments ASAP. Go ahead, lunch and dinner will wait its turn. Right now it’s all about breakfast.

10) The Bird

Ok, listen up The Bird only offers up the breakfast goods once a week, so you’ve been warned not to miss it. If they offered it a few more times they would be way further down this list, but hey just be thankful that they serve it at all. They don’t even call it breakfast, they had to think of something even better to describe the awesomeness that comes but once a week. It’s dubbed “Sunday Funday” and it includes bottomless mimosas and bloodies for $15, along with all the egg-centric heavy hitters you’re craving. Is it Sunday yet?

 9) Pearl Street Bagels

Better than most and too good to toast, one of the best bagels for sure around these parts. Go get your schmear on in any number of delectable varieties. Pretty much the perfect boiled and baked bagel; with a dozen flavors to choose from. Great coffee and bagels, what else do you need to start your morning?

 8) The Granary

Yeah the views of the valley are pretty epic when seated at The Granary at Spring Creek Ranch. The only thing that probably rivals it is the stunning view you get of the salmon and egg scramble on your plate, or anything else you pick from the menu for that matter. Let’s face it you are definitely not starting your day off at some roadside greasy spoon when you dine at the Granary. The only bad thing is the rest of your day could all be downhill from here. Oh well, afternoon and night are overrated anyway.

7) Café Boheme

Fancy some French cuisine for breakfast, then grab a table at Café Boheme. The croissants are a stellar and solid choice, but crepes are the call at this spot. Either sweet or savory they do not disappoint, from fresh fruit, to the addictive Nutella, to even ice cream if you are feeling particularly sweet. Or keep it classic and savory with eggs, ham, and cheese. Omeletts, pancakes, and of course French Toast round out the breakfast menu.

 6) The Virginian

You’re on the road and by now you might be craving some breakfast comfort food. Well look no further because The Virginian is the place to go for a down home-style breakfast in Jackson Hole. This family owned restaurant has a menu that reads like a breakfast list of greatest hits. Eggs, corned beef hash, chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy. If you leave this authentic cowboy joint hungry it’ll be your own fault.

 5) E. Leaven

Jackson used to be a one-bagel town until E. Leaven opened up shop and started providing some worthy and delicious competition. The bagel sandwich is a no brainer at this place or step it up with the nova lox platter with a bagel of course. Omeletts are big and hearty and rep the Southwest, the Mediterranean, and Chicago for bold flavors. Or get creative and build your own.

 4) Café Genevive

Technically they call it brunch, but  at Cafe Genevieve, all you need to know is that it’s delicious and it’s served until 3pm. Feel free to sleep in, because you can still score such mouth watering items as fried chicken and waffles, Spanish Frittatas, or eggs benedict. Get that down home flavor way out west, as they’ve been “bringing the south to your mouth since 2010.”

3) The Bunnery

An institution as this point, The Bunnery is a bakery and restaurant on the square since 1975. I know it’s breakfast but please, please don’t forget about their amazing desserts. Yep, it’s a bakery and you better be taking home some sweet treats if you didn’t leave any room after all those eggs and hash browns. They had us at eggs all day. Breakfast for the win at the Bunnery.

 2) Bubba’s Bar-B-Que

Bubba’s is more than an amazing lunch and dinner spot for barbecue. Locals have long known that their breakfast is only a close second to fresh powder for the best reason to get out of bed in the morning. You can’t go wrong with their big biscuits, omeletts, or something tasty found under their premier breakfast section of the menu. It’s premier for a reason people.

 1) Nora’s Fish Creek Inn

Without a doubt worth the 7-mile drive out of town, we’d even walk to get to Nora’s Fish Creek Inn in Wilson. You just might find yourself sitting at a table next to a former President, VP, or even Han Solo. There aren’t many places in town that can boast about having a James Beard Award, but Nora would rather gush about her world famous huevos rancheros and her western classic trout and eggs. Number one for a reason. Go.
