The Best Day of Your Life: Fly Fishing in Jackson Hole with Josh Gallivan

Interview by Steven Glass
Photos by Ryan Sheets – Sheetsstudios.com

I first met up with local fly fishing guide, Josh Gallivan, at Thai Me Up after he countered my initial offer to meet at my office for an interview for this blog. I guess he had worked up an appetite and thirst from being on the river all day and the food and beverage offerings were much more abundant and tasty at this local hot spot than at my office. My first impressions were that he looked like a young Stephen Dorf, and was dressed as you would pretty much expect your average fishing guide to dress; baseball hat, flip flops, and a Patagonia button-down shirt. He later listed “anything Patagonia” as his favorite piece of gear when I asked (Patagonia if you are listening you should sponsor this guy ASAP).

Being a fly fishing guide is not a 9 to 5 gig for Josh, but rather it’s a lifestyle and he’s pretty much consumed by it. Gallivan is a Jackson, WY local, born and raised and at the young age of 28 is already a seasoned and knowledgable fishing guide with seven years in the guide game. His energy is palpable and contagious, and he wants everyone to be as stoked about fly fishing or travel or conservation as he is. He’s obsessed about learning about his craft and sees the world through a smile and a sense of adventure that we would all like to have, but few actually possess or even act on.

He’s made a lot of sacrifices to dedicate himself to being a fly fishing guide, such as giving up snowboarding in the winter or spending time away from his girlfriend and family because he doesn’t like to change gears, so he keeps traveling in winter to exotic locales to be where the fish are. He rattles off a quick list of places that he’s been lately that would be a decent bucket list for just about anyone’s lifetime travel plans; New Zealand, South America, Fiji, the Bahamas. In fact he’s seen 15 countries in the last two years, and often he’s gone alone to just fish. Listening to his tales of travel and adventure makes him sound like a modern day Jack Kerouac of fly fishing. He says when you travel alone you make friends and are more available to the world. And adds that before you go on a 21-day hitchhiking boat trip with someone, you should get drunk with them first to see if you’ll even be able to stand them.

Not only does all his wanderlust travel inspire him, but it also gets him future business, which is important because one of his goals is to be a guide year round not just in the summer, so he needs to grow and sustain his brand. The world after all is 85% water, which makes for endless fly fishing and travel opportunities. He’d love to eventually bring clients around the world, where he could hire local guides and bring money into the countries he came to visit and fish in.

In order to chase his dreams he needs to live in van in New Zealand, while the rest of us punch clocks and sit at desks. He’s always the happiest guy in the boat on the river. Fishing for Josh is not a living, but more of a life. He often has clients, well to do lawyers or surgeons telling him that he’s the one that has this thing called life figured out. People often question themselves while on the river. It probably has something to do with the peace and solitude or maybe it’s just the simplicity of the fishing act. When you find yourself standing in a river you are in the moment, it’s like a zen level. All you need is a fly rod and a license. There is no other place you need to be.

Josh guides everyone from beginners to experts. When Tom Brokaw is in town, an expert fisherman in his own right, he calls Josh for a great day on the Snake. Fifty percent of his clients are repeat clients, so if you want to get him as your guide you better contact him pronto. He says bluntly that he tries to change everyone’s life when he goes out with them for the day. “I want them to have the best day of their life on the river when I guide.” He starts every trip by blowing into a conch shell to set the tone for the group. It’s a ritual that brings joy and happiness. A perfect day on the river for Josh is when he can feed off his client’s energy, when the fishing suddenly turns on, and people get fired up. Things start happening, it may appear hectic, he’ll start happily shouting instructions, cast here, with fish jumping out of the water, the sun shining just right. A perfect moment for him and his clients. And maybe some of them see everything different after that. No two fish are the same and each day is different on the river. The only constant is that there are no bad days on the water. “Everything I do is with fly fishing in mind.”

Optimized-Ryan Sheets - Josh - Fly Fishing - Jenny Lake - 2

When the guiding season winds down, Josh will be working with Sheets Studios this fall to make a film about the Snake River. He grew up on the famed Snake, so this story is personal for him and he wants future generations to enjoy it like he has. They envision the project to be an all American film about fly fishing in the west that touches on themes such as the Jackson Lake Dam, recreation, and environmental sustainability. He doesn’t even have to think about it when I ask him what is the most important thing he’s learned on the river. He takes the last sip of his Thai Me Up crafted, aptly named 2×4 beer and says, “Conservation…appreciating and saving fish.” Then just like that, he’s off to meet some clients for a bit who just texted from another close by watering hole, before he wants to wake up at 6:30 am and do it all over again.

Jackson Hole Fly Fishing

Our Favorite Water Activities in Jackson Hole

People may tend to think of the frozen variety of water when they think of Jackson Hole, i.e. cold smoke and cowboy powder, but come summer time the melted snow makes for perfect lakes and rivers. Nothing is quite as refreshing or inspiring as getting in some water when trying to beat the heat. Swimming pools are great, but feel more like a mechanical treadmill when you can swim, float, boat, or fish outside as mother nature intended. No chlorine needed, just pack your favorite swimming suit and take to the water like a cut-throat trout.

Tubing

Photo Jul 30, 2 21 28 PMTubing is in a word, chill. We’d also accept perfect. All you need is an old school tire tube from any of the local tire shops or you can go new school with a state of the art inflatable tube complete with cup holders, headrest, and handles. Either one shouldn’t set you back more than about $25 and easily deflates, so there’s no dock fees to keep it at the lake. This is all you really need to float, but sure you can throw in a floating cooler, beer, (or favorite beverage), waterproof bluetooth speakers, and you get the point. Pretty soon the river is your oyster so to speak. Call some friends, grab some bungees and carabiners and join up all your tubes like Voltron and form the funnest floating tube flotilla you can imagine. Then just float a river or body water of your choice. When you float at such a chill, leisurely pace down the river, you have no choice, but to be in the moment, take in your beautiful surroundings and just enjoy yourself.

SUP

10253823_10102573379658586_3770164810190041274_nStand Up Paddle Boarding is the biggest thing to happen to water sports, since well water. As you may have figured out Jackson has a lot to offer, but typically large swells off a north shore is not one of them. No fear you can still bust out a SUP and get around the local rivers and lakes. You don’t even have to get wet if you don’t want to. These boards are long, buoyant, and stable. There’s even room on these things to pack a lunch, drinks, or your dog. There are a great workout as you stand tall and paddle around. Now you just need to buy one of those big floppy hats to complete the look. Rent your own SUP today over at TetonVillageSports.com or JacksonHoleKayak.com.

Rafting

IMG_7677Floating the Snake River with a local guide company is must on your Jackson bucket list. There’s a ton of trips to choose from that will be right for you and your family. Everything from rafting rapids to scenic floats that even provide lunch. Getting in a raft is also a great way to see some local wildlife, as the local rivers attract thirsty and hungry animals looking for a quick drink or bite. You can’t really go wrong with any of the local outfitters, as they are all experienced and offer unforgettable memories on the river. A quick google search will give you plenty of options, but to get you started check out  Dave Hansen WhitewaterBlackDogRaftCompany.com, or BarkerEwing.com.

Wakeboarding / Wakesurfing

WakeSurfing-Jackson-HoleJust because winter is over doesn’t mean you can’t board, surf, or ski the melted snow, you just need a boat and some gear. For this one it helps to have your own or some really cool friends that have a boat and want to take you out for the day. It makes for a fun day out at the Palisades or in Grand Teton National Park. It’s pretty much the closest you’ll get to skiing or snowboarding in August and won’t have to worry about frost bite or lift lines. Plus you get to say all day, “I’m on a boat!” Go carve up the lake and have some fun.

Fishing

Jackson Hole Fly FishingIf you didn’t notice Jackson is pretty much a fishing paradise. Endless mountain rivers and wide open spaces. In fact there’s enough rivers around here for everyone to get there own to stand in and fish. So grab your waders, your flies and go stand in the river. It’s addicting, we warned you. We would tell you where to go, but that violates the first rule of fish club, so just ask around and we’re sure some sympathetic soul will give you a nibble of where to go. There’s really no bad place to start, and fishing the day away in Jackson is no hyperbole, life changing. For those of you who want a referral for a guide, we recommend Josh Gallivan, a born and raised Jackson local.

Hot Springs

Jackson Hole Hot SpringsOkay, sometimes the point of slipping into some water around here is not to cool off, but to enjoy some of mother nature’s hot tubs that just happen to be in an idyllic and romantic setting. Natural hot springs are a thing of wonder, beauty, and do wonders for all those worn out hiking legs. You can get your soak on at Granite Hot Springs, which is about 30 miles from Jackson. A soak will set you back about $6. Just go, your body and soul will thank you.

1237079_2058879826784_1478589700_nKayak

So maybe you’ve done the tubing thing and want to have a little more paddling control or possibly you’ve been around the lake on a SUP and are ready sit down and make your way around, if so then you need to get in a kayak ASAP. Kayaks are a great choice for getting around flat water as well as some rapids. You can go with that special someone in a two person kayak, or even go solo in your own. Think about what kind of water you’ll be on to pick type of kayak for your outing. Kayaks can provide the perfect way to get out on to the water and cruise with ease.

Canoe

Canoes are another great choice for getting around on a lake or mellow river. You can pile the whole family into a canoe and make a fun day of it. The gentle pace of a canoe provides some amazing wildlife viewing opportunities as you slow to the pace of the waterway you are on. You can stow a bunch of gear and food in your canoe and travel in style down your favorite river or lake. Plus the more people you have in it means you have more potential rowers, so everyone can help out and get a break as well.

Lake Cruise

shutterstock_119864398Sometimes it’s best to leave the driving, we mean boating to someone else and just kick back and enjoy your time on the lake. You and your group will be free to check out the gorgeous scenery and can even be treated to breakfast, lunch, or dinner. On a lake cruise on Jackson Lake you’ll learn about local history and get a chance to walk around  Elk Island and do some exploring. For more info on rates and tours go to gtlc.com

Swimming

It’s great to be on the river or lake in the summer time out here in Jackson, but sometimes it’s even better to be in the river or lake. Nothing helps you cool off faster and beat the summer heat then just jumping in a cold and refreshing body of water and doing your best trout stroke. The water is pure and does wonders for your body, mind, and soul. A river or lake is better any day over a swimming pool, unless it’s December. Otherwise a natural body of water can’t be beat for some summer time swimming.

10 Amazing Hikes in Jackson

Hiking may just be the perfect summer activity in the Tetons. Nothing quite recharges you and makes you appreciate nature and be in the moment like a walk through the woods. So, turn off your phones you probably won’t have cell service anyway, pack a lunch, some gear, and head out with some friends or family for the afternoon. The whole area (Jackson, Grand Teton National Park, and Teton Valley, Idaho) are chock full of great hikes, so to make it a little easier we’ve selected 10 amazing hikes for you to start with. Don’t worry there are plenty more to check out when you are finished with these. Happy hiking.

Teton Valley, Idaho

Often referred to as the quiet side of the Tetons, Teton Valley, Idaho is a great place to find your own private Idaho and get out and go for a hike. The sun sets later over the hill in Idaho so you’ll have a bit more daylight to conquer that long hike or to simply spend more time at the lake you hike to.

Packsaddle Lake

Packsaddle Lake is the shortest hike on this list, but as its name implies the big payoff is the lake at the end of the trail. The trail is about a half mile each way and is fairly steep in parts as it descends to the lake. Make sure you bring bathing suits and consider bringing tubes to float in style around the lake. The short distance allows you to bring a bit more gear to play at the lake without breaking your back by lugging it 10 miles. Make a day of it by bringing a picnic and spending some quality time by the lake. Just remember that although it’s a short hike, that it’s pretty much all up hill on the way out. FYI the road to the trailhead is a bit adventurous, but totally doable in a front wheel drive car. Solitude at the lake on a hot day is priceless and the energy expelled to get there is pretty minimal.

Darby Canyon

Darby Canyon offers a ton of trails and primitive camp sites to explore in Idaho. One of the most popular trails to hike is the Wind Cave trail. A roundtrip to the Wind Cave is a little over 5 – 6 miles and is rated as moderately strenuous with an elevation gain of 1,800 feet. After many switchbacks through pristine forests you’ll eventually climb a steep section of trail that brings you to the opening of the Wind Cave. The mouth of the Wind Cave juts out at 125 feet tall by 25 feet wide and comes complete with a waterfall. The water rushing out of the cave varies by the time of year. The Wind Cave is often explored by spelunkers, but is best left to those with proper training and experience as it gets tight and technical quick inside the cave.

Table Mountain

At 12 miles round trip Table Mountain offers a longer hiking experience and breathtaking views of the back side of the Grand Teton. It’s not just the distance, but with an elevation gain of almost 4,000 feet, the Table Mountain trail makes for one enjoyable, albeit exhausting day. Make sure you leave early as it could take up to 12 hours to complete  from start to finish. Anyone who takes on this hiking challenge will be rewarded with jaw dropping western views of the Tetons as the Grand Teton sits directly in front of you and just a mile away. It’ll look so close you’ll think you’ll be able to reach out and touch it. Highly recommended for the advanced hiker.

Jackson

Snow King

Snow King Mountain is the locals gym in the summer and winter. In the winter you’ll find people booting up and skiing down and in the summer you’ll see plenty of people and dogs hiking up for the best view of the town of Jackson and surrounding valley. The good news is that it’s just under 2 miles to the top. The bad news it’s almost all straight up with an elevation gain of 1,500 feet. If the hike to the top has worn you out or you want to save your knees simply ride the lift down for only $5. Best view of Jackson hands down.

Sheeo Mountain and Sleeping Indian
Sheep Mountain and Sleeping Indian

Sleeping Indian

This one is a bit of a work out, since the roundtrip mileage clocks in at around 12 miles and has an elevation gain of over 4,000 feet, but the views, oh the views. Technically you are hiking up Sheep Mountain, but everyone refers to it as Sleeping Indian, since when viewed from a distance it looks like just that, an Indian lying down complete with a headdress. If you make it to the top there may not be a better view of the magnificent Tetons in all of Jackson. Simply stunning.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

If elevation gain is not your thing, then simply walk on the tram and be whisked away to the top of the mountain. In 15 minutes you can gain 4,139 feet of elevation without breaking a sweat. A tram pass will set you back $37 or go online and reserve a pass for $5 cheaper. Whatever it costs, not having to hike that steep terrain to the top is priceless. Once at the top it’s not all views and waffles, though those can be found as well. The top of the tram offers plenty of hiking options.

  • Rock Springs Loop – 4.3 miles roundtrip
  • Rock Springs Overlook – 2 miles
  • Green River Overlook – 3.5 miles

For more info on hiking at the top of Rendezvous Peak go to jacksonhole.com

Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park is a hiker’s paradise. Only things to consider are how far off the grid do you want to go and how much time do you have? Don’t worry you don’t have to be an extreme hiker or mountain climber to enjoy a walk in these nationally preserved woods, but you do have to get out of your car and go. $30 gets you in the park for 7 days or snag an Interagency Annual Pass for $80 which gets you access to most National Parks and federal recreation areas. Seems a lot cheaper and more fun than a gym membership, and you’ll probably even use it.

phelps-lake-views
Phelps Lake

Leigh Lake

We’ll start you off with a stroll through the park kind of hike, so as not scare you off of what GTNP has to offer. A roundtrip is about 5.5 miles, which is totally doable when you realize the elevation gain is only 50 feet. It’s just a walk around the lake, Leigh Lake which happens to take the bronze for third largest lake in GTNP. Oh and you’ll get to stare at such stunning peaks as Teewinot, Rockchuck, and Mount Moran while you do it.

Phelps Lake Loop

The trailhead is located in the Laurence S. Rockefeller Preserve which is typically the quieter side of GTNP. Through forest and wild flowers the trail will eventually drop you off at picturesque Phelps Lake and is about a 7 mile loop with only a 475 foot elevation gain. The perfect Wyoming hike is to a body of water and this lake doesn’t disappoint. Feel free to go for a swim to cool off, or jump off a big rock into the lake if you are up for it. You’ll also get good views of Death Canyon which could be a another hike for another day.

Hiking to Taggart Lake
Taggert/Bradley Lake Hike

Bradley Lake

Sticking with the lake theme in GTNP, Bradley Lake offers a beautiful and private day for you and your companions at a stunning mountain lake. At just under 5 miles total trip this relatively easy hike is family friendly and gets you off the beaten path. Taggert Lake is perhaps the more famous lake of the two and worth a look as well and is near by, so you can hike to both. There is only one campsite at Bradley Lake and it’s reserved for backpackers taking the Grand Teton Loop, so you will only see fellow day hikers. Bradley Lake provides a beautiful setting with it’s pristine mountain waters. Well worth the steps.

Cascade Canyon

One of the most popular hikes in GTNP is to take the Jenny Lake shuttle across and hike to Inspiration Point, which is a classic route, it’s just unfortunately typically crowded. If you haven’t been you totally should brave the crowds and go, but if you push on just a bit more the crowds really thin out and you have the Park more to yourself at Cascade Canyon. It’s about 10 miles roundtrip with about 1,000 feet in elevation gain. The steep canyon offers incredible views, just make sure you don’t gaze too long at your surroundings and miss the ferry back, otherwise you’ll be in store for another 2 miles of hiking.

Jackson Hole 4th of July, 2015

Jackson Hole 4th of July, 2015

The fourth is a day set aside for this great country to celebrate its independence. It’s kind of like a birthday party and everyone in the country is invited. Although it’s probably not your first 4th of July, it may be your first time celebrating in Jackson Hole and we do things a little bit different and bigger around here. It’s a great way to officially kick off the summer and there’s no where better to be than right here in Jackson Hole celebrating with Uncle Sam.

Music

Red White and Two – July 3, 2015
Technically, not the fourth quite yet, as this is more of an appetizer to the big day to come, but it’s still a great chance to have a lot of fun and see some live music at Teton Village. It’s the first day of two nights of free music concerts at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. For lineup and more info go to jacksonhole.com

JacksonHoleLive – July 3, 2015
Jackson’s favorite free summer concert sets the table for all the fun festivities of the fourth with a concert on the third. Hey it’s Friday night why wouldn’t you check out the sounds of Jared & The Mill at Snow King Ball Field. This group from Phoenix defies easy categorization, so if you dig bluegrass, folk, and Americana you’ll be in for a great night. Make sure to come early and catch the opener Wyatt Lowe & The Mayhem Kings. For more info go to jackshonholelivemusic.com.

Jackson Hole Live – July 4, 2015
The lineup on the 4th for JacksonHoleLive this year is billed as “Chicken Fried Bluegrass ’N Fireworks”, what more could you really ask for? Local favorites One Ton Pig get heavy with the tunes and blend folk, country, jazz, gospel, bluegrass, and rock all into their signature six-piece sound at Snow King Ball Park. In addition to the music, enjoy family fun activities and local food from Cafe Genevieve, Everest Momo Shack, Haydens Post, The Indian, Kim’s Corner, and Pinky G’s Pizzeria. For more info check out jackshonholelivemusic.com.

Music in the Hole by Grand Teton Music Festival
Festival Orchestra – Music in the Hole is a free concert with tickets, but unfortunately it’s sold out as of this writing. This patriotic pops concert with the Festival Orchestra, featuring soloist Doug LaBrecque, and conducted by Music Director Maestro Donald Runnicles is a great chance to hear arrangements from Copland, Berlin, and Tchaikovsky to name just a few. Don’t worry you could still get lucky and snag tickets by getting on the waiting list by calling 307-733-128 or for more info go to gtmf.org.

Food & Festivities

Pancake Breakfast on the Town Square
It’s a tradition around these parts and how the Fourth of July gets kicked off every year in Jackson. It’s a long day and night around here celebrating the birth of this great nation, so make sure to treat yourself right and fuel up on pancakes at the Pancake Breakfast on the Town Square, which is presented by the Jackson Hole Lions Club. Oh and did we say there will be pancakes, glorious pancakes? Get your own stack from 7 am to 10 am.

4th of July Parade
Nothing is quite as patriotic as a parade on the fourth in a small town. Now take that small town and put it in the Tetons and you have the ultimate patriotic celebration. The Jackson Hole 4th of July Parade is a local salute to Uncle Sam with floats, horses, roller skates, clowns, hot rods, music, and more. The parade starts at 10:30 am and makes it way around town. Grab a spot on the square for optimal viewing.

Jackson Hole Rodeo
The Jackson Hole Rodeo is as American as fireworks and apple pie and it just happens to be running on Independence Day as well. Come down to the rodeo and check out some real cowboys and cowgirls keeping this western tradition alive with such action packed events like Bull Riding, Bronc Riding, Barrel Racing, and Roping. Save $5 when your buy your tickets online at jhrodeo.com.

Fireworks
Don’t worry you may not be in the nation’s capital, but you’ll still be able to see plenty of fireworks in Jackson. A fourth without fireworks would be like eating Smores without marshmallows or chocolate, and well nobody wants that. With not one, but two locations to watch fireworks this year in Jackson the Tetons will surely be lit up with a wonderful and unforgettable light show. Both shows start at 10 pm so, you’ll have to pick which one is a better fit for you depending on where you are celebrating. Enjoy the fireworks in the town of Jackson at the base of Snow King Mountain or see them out at the legendary ski resort in Teton Village. Either way you can’t go wrong.

Summer 2015 Music Guide for Jackson Hole

Welcome to your definitive summer 2015 music guide for Jackson Hole. Jackson Hole is known for shedding its winter layers and for getting its groove on come summer and this might just be the best music lineup this town has ever seen. It’s the kind of summer that you may very well be telling your grandchildren about, “Back in my day, the summer of  2015…music…Jackson Hole…I was there!” But before we talk about it in the past tense let’s first enjoy this historical music lineup that is about to grace this beautiful mountain town. The amount of acts making their way out to the “Hole” this summer is in a word massive, which easily could make this music guide a tome rivaling the likes of War and Peace, but obviously with a much hipper soundtrack. Don’t worry we will give you the highlights and point you to where you need to go to find out everything, so you don’t miss a single beat in what is surely going to be one epic summer in Jackson Hole.

Jackson Hole Live

Jackson-Hole-LiveJackson’s favorite FREE outdoor concert series at the base of Snow King returns this summer for more of the same great vibes. Every year is different with a new lineup, but you can’t beat hanging out with some friends and family on a beautiful night right in town listening to live music. The series doesn’t have a set day, so you may find Wednesday suddenly your new favorite day of the week. Since the music schedule changes from gig to gig make sure you stay in the know and don’t suffer a relapse of FOMO (fear of missing out) when you show up to work and everyone is raving about last night’s ridiculous show. Don’t be that guy or girl. Here’s a highlight of some of the Jackson Hole Live schedule and to get the rest of the lineup go to jacksonholelivemusic.com.

The John Butler Trio

The series kicks off Sunday, June 21 at 5:30 pm as Jackson Hole Live hosts the 10th Annual Crawfish Boil. The John Butler Trio gets things going as the headliner with their special blend of sounds as an eclectic jam band. Unless you are in the know they may be new to you, but this band is big in Australia, from which they hail. Their last three albums have debuted at #1 in the land down under. Summer Solstice, Father’s Day, the Crawfish Boil, and Jackson Hole Live all in one day make this an amazing kickoff to summer.

Lyrics Born

Lyrics Born has been doing his own thing in the rap game for quite sometime, with eight albums under his belt he’s a mainstay in the hip hop game. If you were lucky you may have caught him at tour stops the last few years in Victor, Idaho, but on Wednesday, July 15, he’ll save you a ride over the pass. The Bay Area native is sure to get your head bobbing with his fresh freestyle flows.

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe

Karl Denson lives on the road, with about 150 shows a year, which means you may have the chance to see him and his band somewhere else, but this is the only chance to get funky with this tight music crew in Jackson this summer. For one night on Wednesday, August 12, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe is sure to turn Snow King Field into the coolest micro music festival in the country. If you like to have fun and get funky, this show is highly recommended.

Contour Music Festival

Contour 2015 logoThis festival makes its inaugural debut this June for “four nights and three days of music, art, and culture” on June 11-14. A killer lineup with a ton of acts including headliners, The Thievery Corporation, ensures that there is pretty much a sound for everyone. It’s also safe to say Jackson Hole has probably never hosted a festival of this magnitude before. This is going to be in a word, epic. Venues for this festival range from the main stage outdoor venue at Snow King to indoor gigs at trendy clubs and theaters all over town. There will literally be chances to hear music all day and all night. This is gonna be like the acclaimed South by Southwest Festival, but at a much higher and scenic locale. You can buy passes for the whole thing or buy for each day. For the full lineup and tickets head to contourmusicfestival.com.

Wildlife Safety

Wildlife Safety

The RV is packed with your family and the map app on your phone is routed for Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone. All you have to do is follow the soothing voice of Siri and stop at all the scenic spots you’ve picked as well as the great places you’ll discover along the way. A big attraction will surely be the wildlife. No trip to these amazing parks is complete without seeing some wildlife, but keep in mind that the wildlife is indeed wild and you need to respect them in their habitat, as you are just passing through and are a visitor in their home. Follow a few simple rules while observing wildlife and you and your family are sure to have an unforgettable and safe day in the park.

Wildlife can sometimes be tricky to spot, as they don’t necessarily realize that you and your family drove all the way from Nebraska just to see them. In fact they don’t even know what Nebraska is nor seem to care. They aren’t on Instagram, don’t care about being in your selfies, and frankly are more interested in foraging for food, sleeping, and hanging out in one of the most scenic places in the world, where they just happen to live then winding up in your vacation photos. Treat them with respect, use some common sense, and you’ll be able to get a ton of photos of all the wildlife you come across.

Where to Look

If you are on a mission to seem some wildlife a good bet is to check in with the Ranger and Information Centers located through out the parks. The Rangers live and work in the parks and know where animals have been hanging out. Rangers will be happy to give you a ton of tips on wildlife etiquette and where you have a good chance to spy some. It’s their job and they want to see you stay safe and have a great time. Trailheads in the park will also often give you a heads up with postings of what to expect if you are venturing off the highway and out of your cars to stretch your legs.

Traffic Jams are Great

A traffic jam is a good indication that a moose, bear, or insert whatever animal you are really hoping to see just happens to be hanging out by the road. If you see a bunch of cars in line and people on the side of the road that’s a sure bet that you’ll see some animals. Feel free to park in a safe spot and get out of your vehicle for a better look and photo op. Just keep in mind not to get too close and always obey Park Rangers. A good rule to follow is to give the animals plenty of ample room to do their thing. That is why you have a zoom on your iPhone or fancy SLR camera. The National Parks recommend that you maintain a safe distance of at least 100 yards or 300 feet from bears and wolves and 25 yards or 75 feet from all other wildlife, unless you are viewing safely from your car. Getting any closer can make the animals nervous and well you don’t want that. A nervous or startled animal is prone to possibly charge or attack. Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park are not petting zoos and the wildlife is indeed wild. The last thing you want to do is come between a mother and her offspring as her motherly instincts will surely kick in, view you as a threat, and possibly attack you. That’s a bad outcome all around and surely to ruin your day, trip, and health.

Keep that Picnic Basket Locked up Like Fort Knox

Make sure to never feed the animals. This should go without saying, but it’s worth repeating. Feeding animals is one of the worst things you can do, as it destroys the natural balance between humans and animals. Animals don’t wear pants, don’t carry wallets, don’t have “jobs”, so you don’t want to get them hooked on Twinkies and Slim Jims that you causally toss their way because they won’t be able to buy any in the future after they acquire a taste for them. After they have had such convenience store delicacies they will be rather upset that they can’t get or buy more, since they don’t wear pants, carry a wallet, or have “jobs”. Don’t ruin grass and berries for them. Grass and berries are delicious when you are hungry and live in a National Park. You also don’t want to inadverntly feed anything besides you and your family, so make sure not to leave coolers or any food unattended that any curious animals can get into. They have an amazing sense of smell; it’s one of their super powers, so leave any food stowed in your car when not being consumed. If you are camping use bear boxes, food canisters, or secure your food safely off the ground if in the backcountry.

What to Do if You See a Bear??!!

If hiking on trails make sure to make bears aware of you by doing your best American Idol, talking, or even shouting. This will lessen your chances of a sudden encounter. It’s also recommended to hike in groups and pack bear spray, which can be bought or even rented. Hopefully you’ll never have to use it, but it could be the most important item you pack. Just make sure you don’t try and take it on the plane home with you. If you do encounter a bear make sure you don’t run. Bears are much faster than you and could take home gold medals in just about any track meet in the universe. If you see a bear and it is unaware of you, simply go a different direction if possible. If the bear is aware of your presence and not aggressive, slowly back away. If a bear attacks, drop to the ground lie on your belly, and protect your head. Keep your pack on for protection. Lie as still as possible, play dead, and hopefully the bear will lose interest and eventually leave.

Animals in the park are best observed from a safe distance. Trust us they feel the same way about you as well. For safety tips on what to do if you encounter other animals and other wildlife safety measures go to www.nps.gov for more information.

Stay traditional with your menu selections or get inventive, and pick fare that represents your culinary leanings as a couple. The sky is the limit here. Make sure to work with your caterer to have food options for guests that have food allergies or dietary restrictions, such as vegetarians, or food allergies. You won’t be able to please everyone, so make choices that appeal to you, while also serving options for those that are more selective. A hungry guest can be a grumpy guest, but that shouldn’t be a problem when you pick the right caterer for your event.

Flowers

Flowers are a staple at weddings and for good reason. Nothing does more to spruce up the wedding party, ceremony, and reception with beauty than flowers. From corsages, boutonnieres, table settings, and more, your wedding is going to need flowers and you can’t really have enough of them. So, be prepared to become a bit of a botanist when planning your wedding or do the next best thing and hire a creative florist company to handle all of your flower needs.

Music

Nothing quite gets the party going like the music. Whether you opt for a live band or DJ, you’re going to need something besides an iPod most likely for the jams. DJs are great, because with today’s technology they can cue up just about any tune or request a guest could ask for at the press of a button. Some couples want a live band with instruments for the music, which is a great option too for your reception. And if you are on the fence you can always have both.
