Schwabacher's Landing

Schwabacher’s Landing

Channel your inner Ansel Adams, pack up the car with gear, supplies, and family and head to Schwabachers Landing in Grand Teton National Park to get that epic photo of the Tetons. Schwabachers Landing is a boat landing for those looking to float on the Snake River, but a short hike from the parking lot reveals a backdrop of the Tetons that Ansel Adams made famous in his iconic photo of the Snake River. You may not find the exact spot he took the photo, but just about anywhere around Schwabachers Landing makes for a prime photo op of your vacation and is worth printing out, framing, and proudly displaying on your mantle.

Getting There

Schwabacher's LandingSchwabachers Landing in located conveniently just off Highway 89, which makes it a great stop when leaving Jackson and heading north on your way to Yellowstone. Schwabachers Landing is just 5 miles north of Grand Teton National Parks main entrance in Moose, Wyoming. Its an easy spot from the highway to find just turn at the Schwabacher Landing Road sign, although once you turn off the highway youll be on a well maintained dirt and gravel road, so you may need to wash the family cruiser sooner than later. Four-wheel drive isnt needed.

Ansel Adams With An iPhone

Schwabacher's LandingThe best kept secret of Schwabachers Landing may be that you dont have to pay an entrance fee to access it. So it makes for a great spot for those who dont have the time or cash to enter the park at one of the paid entrances. So, no need to worry if your park pass just expired, just follow the road to the parking lot and grab all your photo equipment or simply your iPhone and make your way down the trail. As you head down this well defined path with that futuristic phone of yours that takes amazing photos, surfs the net, and plays Pokemon Go, think about old Ansel Adams. To get the same photo, he was forced to make his way through rough terrain sans a trail lugging a rucksack of about 30 pounds of photography gear as well as a pack mule trailing behind with another 100 pounds of gear and food. Maybe when you are explaining to your friends and family how you got that perfect shot of the Tetons, feel free to embellish your hardship with some of Ansel Adams travails, though maybe leave out the mule part, that might be a bit over the top.

The 4-mile trail around Schwabachers Landing is well maintained and flat, but rutted heavily with tree roots in sections so keep that in mind if you have anyone in your party that is in a wheelchair or stroller. For little ones a Baby Bjorn or carrier is a better bet for making it down the trail. Not to worry, a simple stroll of about a ¼-mile from the parking lot will find you at a perfect opening directly in front of the Tetons and there will even be a wooden bench expecting your arrival.

Where The Wilds Things Are

Schwabacher's LandingThe pro and wanna-be-pro photographers all flock to Schwabachers Landing for early morning sunrises or early evening sunsets. Its common knowledge that those are the best times to spot wildlife in the park, but even those who cant wake up early or time that perfect sunset with animals will be rewarded with gallery worthy images of the Tetons mirror reflected in the water in the foreground. If you are lucky youll spot such wildlife from beavers to bald eagles, but unless its an extremely cloudy or wildfire smoky hazy day, you are guaranteed to bag a photo of those priceless Tetons.

Best Picnic Spot Ever

Schwabacher's LandingIf you dont fancy yourself the next Ansel Adams simply make an afternoon of it and grab picnic supplies in town and spend the day with the family looking for wildlife and enjoying a mellow hike with stunning views. This hike is a favorite among wildlife photographers who flock here in hopes to capture wildlife and the amazing reflection of the Tetons in the meandering path of the Snake River.

With views this stunning you literally cant mess this shot up, just hold your breath for a split second to literally inhale the beauty of your surroundings, steady your shot, pause and click. Pretty much guaranteed to be in your top 10 best photos taken ever.

Phelps Lake, Grand Teton, Jackson Hole Activities

Phelps Lake

Grand Teton National Park is one the most scenic and beautiful spots in the lower 48, period. Yet its so underrated and is often thought of as Yellowstones little brother. Tourists quickly drive through it as if a speed bump to get to the larger, more famous park to the north. We say let summers RV caravan ignore it, so youll have more of Grand Teton National Park to yourself. Thats not to say all of Grand Teton is ignored. Attractions right off the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway, like Jenny Lake, Jackson Lake Lodge, and Colter Bay see a steady throng of tourists as they snake their way up to Yellowstone. So to avoid the crowds and find your peace and solitude, check out the lesser known parts of the park, like Phelps Lake on the often overlooked west side of Grand Teton.

Getting There

At an elevation of well over a mile high, or 6,633 feet high if you are playing National Parks Jeopardy, Phelps Lake is a sight to be seen and wont take you all day on a dusty trail to hike there. You can get to a Phelps Lake trailhead pretty quickly via the Moose-Wilson Road if you happen to already be out by Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Dont worry if you are coming from town you can still go through the main entrance to the park and simply make a left on the Moose-Wilson Road instead of continuing straight on John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway. Keep in mind that about half of the Moose-Wilson Road isnt paved depending on which entrance you come in from. The road is well maintained, but narrows in parts with even a one-lane bridge, which helps add to the outdoor adventure motif of your surroundings. Four-wheel or all-wheel drive isnt necessary on the Moose-Wilson Road, but your car may be due for a wash afterwards. Also, keep in mind that this road is closed to cars from November 1 to April 30.

Hitting the Trail

John D. Rockefeller, Jr. donated his Wyoming land holdings to the government to create Grand Teton National Park. The family however kept a smaller portion of this land for a retreat and ranch until 2001 when they donated the last 1,106 acres that became known as the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve. The Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve makes for a great starting point to check out Phelps Lake.

Your other option to get to Phelps Lake is via the Death Canyon trailhead. This is a good option if you are planning on backpacking in and camping at the lake. You can obtain a backcountry permit at the visitors center and make sure to pack everything youll need for your stay, including warm clothes, sunscreen, food, water, and bear spray.

Between the two trailheads youll have the option of a few routes to an overlook of the lake or to the lake itself. The overlook trail is just short of a mile each way with an option to descend to the lake which is another mile. Also, there is a trail that goes all the way around the lake and is about 4 miles round trip. From the south shore of the lake youll have amazing views of Death Canyon. Dont worry, its not as scary as it sounds and offers stunning views of this canyon that was formed by glaciers as was Phelps Lake. The lakes mirrored reflection of the mountains is definitely camera worthy and is sure to garner a ton of likes when you post it on Facebook. The north shore offers glimpses of the equally beautiful Gros Ventre mountains. From either shore youll have epic views and wont believe how little effort it took to get to this secluded paradise.

Jumping Rock

If you are brave enough and hot enough you can make your way to Jumping Rock to cool off. Jumping Rock sits on the northern side of Phelps Lake. Its about a 25 to 30-foot drop into the lake with a deep enough splash point. If its a warm day there is a good chance that youll see a bunch of people jumping into the cold waters below or youll at least hear the hooting and hollering. The brisk temps of the lake should reinvigorate you or sober up your adrenaline as you swim out and make your way back up to Jumping Rock to give it another go.

Phelps Lake makes for a great day outing with the family or overnight trip with some planning, as it offers a lot of reward with minimal effort. For maps and more on trail routes, stop in at a Grand Teton visitor center or go to nps.gov/grte.

Jackson Hole 4th of July, 2015

4th of July in Jackson Hole – 2016

Every summer day in Jackson is reason enough to celebrate, but nothing quite beats the 4th of July in Jackson Hole. It’s like the Super Bowl of holidays, with the parades, the fanfare, the tailgating, and the fireworks, as you celebrate all things America with your family, friends, and pretty much the whole town of Jackson Hole. So here’s to the unofficial start of summer and here’s to you Uncle Sam. Check out some or all of these local events to ensure you have the best 4th ever in Jackson.

4th of July Morning Rituals

Fuel for the 4th

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Not quite sure who they are, but it’s definitely the first meal of the day, so why would you want to miss it? Plus you are going to need all the energy you can get for the 4th. This holiday is a marathon, not a sprint, so make sure to get a good start with some much needed a.m. calories at the JH Lions Club 4th of July Street Breakfast. The chow can be found just off Town Square on Center Street. It’s an annual tradition, so you know the food is legit. $10 for adults, $5 for kids (4 to 8) and free for the little ones 3 and under. The breakfast bell tolls for thee from 7am – 10am. Don’t miss it.

4th of July Parade

After breakfast, you may want to walk off some of those pancakes, but don’t worry it’s a short walk right over to the Howdy Pardners Ambassador Club 4th of July Parade. This main street type of parade has been going on about as long as the 4th has been an official holiday. Celebrate Uncle Sam and the good ol’ U.S. of A. in this small town parade that boasts a never ending stream of floats, classic hot rods, music, and more. The parade kicks off at 10:30am as it make its way around town. There’s not a bad place from the street to watch with you and your family and even though the town turns out for it, it’s nothing like the crowds, drama, and commitment of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This one is enjoyable for sure. Little kids will love collecting all the candy thrown from the passing floats. Judging of the vast local entries takes place at the grandstand on the town square. Who knows, maybe next year you’ll be organizing and designing your own float and be in this historic parade, so pay close attention this year from the sidelines. For info on being in the parade call the Chamber of Commerce at 307-733- 3316 or go to http://cdn.jacksonholechamber.com/CMS/2184/fourthofjulyparade.pdf.

Fun Before the Grand Finale of Fireworks

Eating Again, Finally

Well after all that excitement from the morning you may want some down time or you are probably ready for the second most important meal of the day, lunch. Or if you ask us whatever meal you happen to be eating is the most important. If you are still walking around town you’ll run into a plethora of great options right around the Town Square or you could always run to the grocery store if you aren’t stocked up already and throw your own barbecue with friends and family. You can’t go wrong with a barbecue on the 4th, it’s a classic.

Town Square Shootout

Head back to the Town Square or maybe you never left since the parade and lunch and shopping. The Shootout starts a shootin’ at 6pm. It’s a free and fun event and is a great way to learn about Jackson’s past without having to build your own time machine. If you know anything about time machines, you know they are so temperamental and always needing repairs. Leave the time travel to the good folks at the Town Square Shootout because those comfy new shoes you’re wearing were not around back then, nor was that iced coffee confection you are probably sipping on.

Get Your Rodeo On

Well you’ve still got a few more hours before the big show of fireworks, so why not spend it at the Jackson Hole Rodeo. The rodeo in town has been going strong for over 100 years in Jackson. It makes for a great night of fun for the family and is the perfect compliment to the 4th of July. The rodeo starts at 8pm on the 4th and runs 2 hours. Save $5 a ticket when you buy in advance online at jhrodeo.com.

Music

Teton Village offers up some sound musical options for your 4th. The music begins with the local and legendary Jazz Foundation of JH at 4pm. If you already grabbed tickets, you’ll be checking out the Patriotic Pops program at Walk Festival Hall that is part of the Grand Teton Music Festival’s summer lineup. This show is currently sold out, but you can call 307-733- 3050 to be added to the wait-list or catch the live audio feed of it at the Village for those who missed out on tickets. Calle Mambo, with their blended brew of Latin and Salsa, is the opening act for the fireworks headliner. They’ll have you up and dancing to their rhythms and go on at 8pm.

The Grand Finale

The main event comes at 10pm on the 4th of July with not one, but two possibilities for an epic fireworks show in and outside of town. The thinking on this one is similar to that of a powder day, you don’t want to over think it, but just enjoy it and you can’t go wrong with either. Your two options are fireworks at the base of Snow King Mountain or fireworks at Teton Village at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Make your list of pros and cons for both locations: mountains = check, amazing fireworks = check, yeah you seem to get the idea. It will most likely come down on this one to where you are staying and how far you want to drive, but like we said either one will be amazing and do Uncle Sam, America, and you and your family justice.

Whatever you do on the 4th of July in Jackson Hole, just have fun and enjoy it with family and friends in this beautiful valley.

Jackson Hole Babygear

Making it easier to travel to Jackson Hole with your baby

Jenny Lake hike with baby in towWe all know when you have kids it’s not all about you anymore. Babies pack for a trip like Kim K going on world tour. In short there’s gonna be a lot of costume changes and gear. Think Rolling Stones ’72, with roadies to lug not only the amps, guitars, green room, tour bus, but the stage. Like every piece of it.

Relax, you have it mostly figured out because you are taking the family to Jackson Hole for some much needed R&R in what equates to an Ansel Adams photograph. So pretty much, yeah, you are vacationing in a work of art. Kudos to you, family, friends, and strangers, all want to be you and your entourage. But, let’s be realistic there are going to be sacrifices when traveling with a young one. That super-sized bluetooth speaker that shakes serious bass could be a casualty to make room in your suitcase for all of your baby’s gear. Let’s face it, the old adage,” happy wife, happy life” can be multiplied by roughly 1.5 million when it now becomes, “unhappy baby, rough road to crazy”. Make the offspring comfortable and right at home by renting some of the gear you need on vacation without having to pay for overweight airline freight. Save your wallet and back by packing the essentials and renting from the life saving experts at Jackson Hole Baby Gear.

Gear

Reduce your carbon print and simplify travel by leaving some of the baby gear at home. Jackson Hole Baby Gear has you covered better than a pair of double diapers. Just peruse over to jhbabygear.com and check out their amazing selection of safe, clean, top-of-the-line baby products. Pretty much everything is available to rent, except the baby. Within 24 hours you will receive a personal phone call to review and confirm your order. Yes, you can actually talk to a real live sales person on your smartphone instead of just texting and emailing. There is a $20 minimum and you can even rent by the week.

Tired from your travels or that hike? Then just have something delivered. Delivery is just $30, which is the price of a pizza and a couple of beers. You can get baby equipment delivered to your hotel door, so your baby can sleep through the night soundly and you can too. Before you rent, check the daily and weekly prices to get the best deal. Such essentials as cribs, car seats, and strollers are all just a click away. Even rent bath toys and bottle warmers, so you don’t have to max out your carry-ons and camera bags with random baby needs.

Once you have picked out what you need Jackson Hole Baby Gear will deliver prior to your arrival and have everything set up because well, you are on vacation and should just concentrate on that. Who wants to put together a 100-piece crib after 2 flights and multiple time zones. All the gear is safe and ready to be used. Jackson Hole Baby Gear delivers 7 days a week and can work with your schedule and needs.

Babysitting

Bar J Chuckwagon

Bar J Chuckwagon

Welcome to Jackson, Wyoming otherwise known as the “Last of the Old West”. While you are out here on your vacation you’ll most likely want to assimilate to your surroundings and cowboy and cowgirl up. If you’ve seen a few Westerns you know that the cowboy lifestyle although romantic in its spirit of rugged individualism and wide open empty spaces is also a lot of work. Between the cattle herding, fence building, and saddle sores it’s enough to keep a city slicker worn out for a week and who has time for that when on vacation? So skip all the work of the cowboy lifestyle and fast forward to the rewards of the day, the chuckwagon dinner. Relax and spend the evening at the Bar J Chuckwagon where you can fill up on some real down-home food and settle in for some fun entertainment as well. Don’t worry no one will know you didn’t spend the day doing your cowboy chores.

Good Eats

Bring your appetite because the food is authentic western, stick-to-your-ribs grub and plentiful to boot. The gates open at the Bar J Chuckwagon at 5:30pm and the dinner bell can be heard ringing daily at 7pm on the dot. All entrees are served with “a baked potato, famous Bar J beans, homemade biscuits, chunky applesauce, old fashioned, spice cake, real ranch coffee, or tenderfoot lemonade”. The only hard part of your whole night might be picking your entree. Choose between BBQ beef or boneless chicken breast for $25 and $27 respectively, or if both sound good, opt for them both in the combo. For half a sawbuck more, step up to the BBQ pork rib. A few bucks more than that will get you your very own grilled to perfection 12 oz. Rib-Eye. It’s just like what the real cowboys eat. For anything more authentic you’d have to go back in time like Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part III. No microwaves here, just open flames and cast iron dutch ovens. Little cowboys and cowgirls 12 and under get a choice of chicken, beef, or ribs for just $12. Lap-sized cowboys and cowgirls in training eat for free, which means your whole gang will leave happy and full.

Entertainment

After you’ve had your fill of cowboy grub to replenish those weary bones of yours, from doing all that hard work you put in on the ranch earlier in the day (yup, we’re still keeping up that rouse) sit back and be ready to be entertained by the Wyoming and World famous Bar J Wranglers. Part perfect cowboy harmonies and part stand up cowboy humor, the Bar J Wranglers will keep all you cowpokes in the audience entertained with songs and comedy for the rest of the evening. This cowboy troupe has performed with the likes of western royalty such as Roy Rogers and Randy Travis and can’t wait to entertain you after dinner. You can even take home one of the groups albums on CD “For God and Country”  from the Trading Post, barjchuckwagon.com, or from fine stores all around Jackson, so you can sing along, long after you’ve left the chuckwagon and are back in your urban environment, where the cars outnumber the horses and wagons.

Trading Post

Make sure to check out the Bar J’s western village for keepsakes before or after you hitch a ride on your horse-drawn wagon through the western landscape to your tasty dinner that awaits. You’ll be able to take home a souvenir for yourself or family and friends to remember your night home on the range.

Cowboys & Cowgirls Reservations

The Bar J Chuckwagon kicks off yet another memorable summer season that starts Memorial Day Weekend and runs through the last Saturday in September. Yup, they’ve been doing it for 39 years straight, so it ain’t their first rodeo even though it might be your first chuckwagon. We bet you’ll have so much fun it probably won’t be your last. So do yourself a favor and call them today at 307-733-3370 or 1-800-905-2275 for a reservation to secure your spot on the next chuckwagon leaving nightly. Bar J Chuckwagon is just 10 minutes down the trail from downtown Jackson, in Wilson, Wyoming. Even with seating capacities of 700, reservations are strongly encouraged and are only taken by telegraph, er we mean phone. For more information on this must do Jackson adventure, go to barjchuckwagon.com.

Jackson Hole Races Summer 2016

It’s no secret that Jackson is home to extreme mountains and extreme athletes. With its high altitude and vast uninhibited spaces, it makes for the perfect training ground for professional athletes and weekend warriors who want to get in shape and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Treadmills are great, but the gym setting leaves a lot to be desired with their mirrors and endless rows of TVs set to bad cable channels. Sure you are going to get your heart rate up and get your workout in with your treadmill set to the “mountain climber setting” but really, you just want to get it over with as quick a possible. The gym experience is the equivalent of microwaving your dinner. It gets the job done, but you don’t exactly savor the experience.

Luckily you are in Jackson where you can be outside on an open road or trail and have a National Park and National Forest as your workout backdrop. We prefer that option and you should too, because exercising around Jackson is a full body and soul workout. So whether you classify yourself as an extreme athlete or just want to try your first 5k with the family, Jackson in the summer offers the athlete in you plenty of opportunities. Just get out there (the world outside the gym walls) and try these local competitions. And remember to just have some fun, get some fresh mountain air, and run your own race.

Ultimate Towner Obstacle Course – May 15

Ultimate Towner Obstacle CoursePick your squad, get a team together, and get dirty and challenge yourself. This fun event inspires entrants to “turn every obstacle into an opportunity”. It kind of feels like a grown up version of a middle school sports day or a military obstacle course with people competing dressed up for Halloween or Burning Man. You and your team will make your way through all the challenging and fun events, such as the mud crawl, the sand pit, and the sack hop slalom. By the end you’ll be dirty, sweaty, smiling, and stoked with what you have achieved. All ages encouraged to participate. To register and find out more info go to ultimatetowner.com.

Run and Ride For the Cure – June 5

Jackson Hole Half Marathon – June 11

Jackson Hole Half MarathonAlways wanted to run a marathon, but found yourself a bit intimidated? Then start with a half and see how you like it. If you love it, you can always run it twice. Intimidated by a half marathon, don’t worry they offer a 5k too. The Jackson Hole Half Marathon starts at the base of the Tetons in Teton Village and finishes in downtown Jackson. So if nothing else, the scenery is going to motivate you. The 5k starts and finishes in downtown Jackson, but don’t worry the backdrop is just as epic. Everyone who participates gets a t-shirt as a keepsake to remember the big race, because your running blisters are going to eventually go away. You’ll also get a medal, pizza, and other treats at the finish. They pretty much had us at pizza. People can debate about whether hot or cold pizza tastes better, but we think it tastes best after a half marathon. The half marathon costs $75 to register and the 5k is $25. For more info and to get registered, check out jhhalf.com.

Shirley’s Heart Run – June 18

Teton Ogre Adventure Race – June 25-26

The 8-hour Ogre or “Ogre Light” can be done solo or as a two-person team and is made up of 10-15 miles of mountain biking and 6-12 miles of trail running. The 24-hour Ogre is a 2 to 3 person event that encompasses 65-75 miles of mountain biking, 10-20 miles of trail running, and 12-15 miles of canoeing. No, that was not a typo and yes, I had to actually stop and take a break while I wrote that sentence. That my friend is an “Ogre Royale with Cheese”. If you haven’t been scared off yet by the Teton Ogre description, head over to tetonogrear.com for all the details.

19th Annual Big Hole Challenge & Duathlon – July 2

We recommend convalescing and recovering with daily IVs of the Emporium’s famous huckleberry milkshakes. After about a week of these you should be good to go for this next event. Similar drill, as you can do the biking event, or the bike and run, hence the Duathlon name. Do it solo or as a team. For more info, call Peaked Sports at 208-354-2354.

Jackson Hole Summer Events 2016

Welcome to summer in JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING!. In a word it’s GLORIOUS. Even the most die hard local skiers and shredders would agree that there is nothing quite like summertime in Jackson. The valley literally comes to life when the winter snow recedes and transforms this idyllic mountain town. Wildflowers and wildlife are in abundance, while puffy coats and snow boots go into hibernation and in their place t-shirts and flip flops become the dress code of choice. Summer is the perfect time for those would-be tourists that scoff at snow and temps below zero to make their way out to Jackson. Here’s a quick guide of a few events that will be going on this summer when you come to visit.

Music

The music scene in summer offers plenty of different sounds and opportunities for everyone. From big festivals, to intimate concerts, to plenty of free outdoor options to satisfy every music fan’s budget. Here’s a list of some summer favorites to help you get your groove on.

Jackson Hole Live LogoJackson Hole Live
Jackson’s favorite outdoor summer concert series returns with free shows from June to August. Located at the base of Snow King, this already legendary concert series just seems to get better and better every year. Concerts start at 5:30 pm and end typically just before 10 pm. Each show’s lineup is jam packed with an opening act and a headliner. One of the standout concerts this summer will surely be on June 29, when Galactic takes the main stage and local favorites The Canyon Kids open up. For more info on this concert series and to find the complete lineup head to jacksonholelivemusic.com.

Grand Teton Music FestivalGrand Teton Music Festival
Celebrating 10 years in the Tetons, the Grand Teton Music Festival kicks off a two-month blitz of programming in July and August. They begin their summer season on the 4th of July with Patriotic Pops and conclude their summer series on August 20 with Festival Orchestra: Closing Weekend, with plenty of performances in between. But hey, don’t just take our word that the Grand Teton Music Festival is the best bet for classical music in Jackson. The Wall Street Journal, declares it to be, “One of the best places to hear classical music in the summer.” For more info on their programming, head to gtmf.org.

Music on MainMusic on Main (Teton Valley, Idaho)
Heading over the hill to go to the Spud Drive-In isn’t the only reason to make the trek over Teton Pass and into Idaho come summer. Music on Main has been offering free music to the valley for quite some time and they bring in acts from all over the country year in and year out. This Idaho music series runs from late June to mid August. The 2016 lineup hasn’t been announced just yet, but make sure to periodically head over to tetonvalleyfoundation.org to catch who’s playing this summer.

Targhee Fest (Grand Targhee Resort, Atla, WY)
Since 2004 Targhee Fest has transformed the other local area ski resort into a full-on music festival. This year it all goes down July 15 -17 with such notable acts as Grace Potter and Drive By Truckers and a slew more. Grab tickets to this three-day music festival and get more info on acts at grandtarghee.com.

The diverse range of art vendors are made up of local and national artists. All the art action starts at 10 am each day. Plenty of food, music, and kids activities round out this fun, family event. Art vendor booth fees and admission entries go to support art programming at the Art Association of Jackson Hole. More info about this art fair can be found at artassociation.org.

Teton County Fair
It just wouldn’t be summer in Jackson without the Teton County Fair. Billed as “Steers, Cheers, and 60 Years!” of pure Jackson summer fun. Snow King Mountain

Snow King Mountain may play second fiddle to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in the winter, since it’s smaller and offers less skiable terrain, but come summer it’s a whole new story. Don’t get us wrong plenty of summer fun can still be had at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort once the snow is gone, but for those who want some adventure without having to leave the town of Jackson then look no further than Snow King Mountain. This in-town resort is a short walk from the Town Square (just head towards the biggest mountain you see). At Snow King there’s no need to drive out of town for some fun family adventure. In fact there’s so much adventure to be had at Snow King, you and your family will feel like real life action figures come to life. The resort is continually adding new great outdoor activities that the whole family will enjoy along with all the classics that they are known for every summer. Snow King makes for a great all day outing right in the heart of Jackson.

Cowboy Coaster

One of the newest attractions to Snow King Mountain is the Cowboy Coaster. It’s essentially your own personal mountain roller coaster that offers amazing views and on-mountain thrills. Riders are whisked 456 vertical feet up Snow King Mountain and then let loose down a track in their own sled, equipped with a hand brake that controls speed. Go as fast or as slow as you want, with top speeds maxing out at 25 MPH. No need to worry about steering as your sled is secured to the track and designed to follow every hairpin curve before you. Ride solo or with a little one. Riders must be at least 38” tall to ride and 54” tall to drive. The ride up is 5.5 minutes and the approximately mile of track ride down can be done in under 2 minutes or longer for those wanting more of a leisurely ride. Driver tickets start at $20 a ride, passengers $10. Or since you’ll most likely want to do it again, spring for a driver 5-pack for $80/passenger 5-pack for $40. You can grab your tickets at Snow King Mountain Sports. No special gear or clothing necessary, although sunglasses are a good idea to protect against the mountain sun and wind. Open from 9am to 6pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Treetop Adventure

Billed as “Swiss Family Robinson meets X-Games” this one of a kind adventure for the old and new school alike will literally allow you and your family to play high up among the trees. On this wonderfully designed course you’ll be able to zip line, cross suspension bridges and swinging logs, and much more. The adult course, which is 5 courses in all, can be done in about 3 to 4 hours. This includes checking in and a safety course orientation. The kid’s course takes about 1 to 2 hours. The full adult course for ages 12 and up costs $70. The kid’s course for ages 7 and up costs $40. No special training is necessary, just be physically fit and wear appropriate footwear and clothing (no sandals, flip-flops, loose baggy clothing, necklaces, or bracelets). The Treetop Adventure course opens at 10am and other times by reservation. For more info on the course or group pricing call (307) 201-1566.

Alpine Slide

The Alpine Slide is the classic mountain summer time adventure and the only one you will find in Jackson. The course will take you down 350 feet over a half mile track at speeds as fast as 25 MPH. You can control your speed via a hand brake. The resort offers two side-by-side tracks, so you can see who the fastest alpine slider in the family really is. A trip down the slide typically takes between 2 to 3 minutes. A single ride on the Alpine Slide will cost you $15 or snag a 5 ride pass for $60. Children 2 to 6 must ride with an adult. Open 10am to 6pm depending on the weather.

Bungee Trampoline

Get your bounce on and more on the Bungee Trampoline. It’s like joining the circus and busting all those aerials you always wanted to in a quick 2-minute session, so yeah no life long commitment here. You’ll be securely fastened in via harness, with no worries about your sudden fear of heights or hasty return back to earth. It’s a win-win for everyone as kids get to jump around and bust out their best tricks and parents can watch on in amazement. A 2-minute jump session starts at just $10 or if your kids want to keep the bounce going, get a 5 pack of 2-minute sessions for $45.

Paragliding

It’s one thing to stand on top of a mountain and check out the view, but it’s a whole other type of thrill to fly off one and paraglide high above the valley and be the view. Don’t worry you won’t have to do it by yourself as you’ll glide in tandem with a professional paragliding pilot. It’s sure to be an experience you will never forget. Get airborne in a tandem flight for $195 or do a flight with a GoPro to impress everyone you know and the entire internet for $245. A frequent flyer program of 2 or more flights will bring your ticket price down to $175 a ride. For more info, call (307) 690-8726.

Scenic Chairlift Ride

A Scenic Chairlift Ride to the top of Snow King will give you the best views around without having to hike for them and yes people hike to the top everyday. A 12 to 17 minute ride to the top (yes you would still be hiking) will bring you gently up 1,571 feet to the summit. The 360 degree views are simply amazing. Tickets for adults 13 to 64 years old are $17. Juniors, 12 and under $12. Seniors, 65 and older $12. Kids 6 and under are free. Or if you really did hike to the top you can score a ride down and save your knees for just $5.

Hiking

Work off that bison burger and fries by going for a hike to the top of Snow King. The 1.8 mile trail will take you to the summit where you most definitely earned the stunning views. Hiking is free, unless you take the lift down for $5, which very well could be the best $5 you ever spend. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.

Bouldering

Bouldering in Phil Baux Park, which is at the base of Snow King offers a great opportunity for the budding or beginner rock climber in your family. The bouldering park is free and also has picnic tables and horseshoe pits for those who feel safer on the ground. Climbing shoes and a chalk bag are helpful but not required. Keep the canines at home as dogs aren’t allowed in the park.

Action and adventure begins May 20 at Snow King Mountain. Starring you and your family!

Spring Skiing in Jackson Hole 2016

Spring skiing in Jackson Hole can often be the best part of the year. Think of it as the dessert to your season. Gone are the negative temps and the frostbite warnings. In its place you’ll find warm sun and soft corn skiing, which like powder is soft, smooth, and easy to push around with your skis or board. Or if your snow karma is running high you may very well find yourself blanketed by fresh cowboy powder in the morning and clearing sunny skies in the afternoon. The blue bird spring powder day is truly a gift to be enjoyed by those who have made it through another long beautiful winter, or who merely timed it perfect with their vacation plans. You’re never quite sure what the weather will be in the spring in the Tetons, but don’t worry the snow depths are still plenty deep and the skiing is still fantastic. As the mercury rises and ski layers are shed, the mountain takes on a more festive party vibe and offers plenty of opportunities to kick back and raise a toast to Old Man Winter.

Spring Skkiing in Jackcon HoleJackson Hole Rendezvous Spring Festival

Good things come in threes and this year’s Jackson Hole Rendezvous Spring Festival is no exception as it celebrates its third successful swan song to winter. This year’s festival runs March 17-20 and just gets bigger and better every year and features some great music acts. The festival offers two scenic locations for concerts: historic downtown on the Town Square and right at the base of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Sneaky Pete

Local favorites Sneaky Pete and the Secret Weapons get the Rendezvous Festival started at the mountain with their high energy and fun live show. Their sound is perfect for coming down off the mountain and segueing right into apres ski.

Nathaniel

Catch Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats mix of soul, blues, and rock straight off their European tour and into the Tetons as they kick off the 2016 festival right on the Town Square in Jackson. You have may have seen them on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, so be sure to catch them for free in Jackson before they head back on tour to Australia.

Zac brown

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood could easily be the headliner at just about any festival, but on this night they’re only the opening act. Sounds like quite a night. The Chris Robinson Brotherhood has been together since 2011 when Robinson’s band The Black Crowes took a break. The Brotherhood  has been rocking a heavy blues rock and psychedelic sound ever since and has jammed with Grateful Dead members and others on stage.

The Zac Brown Band, a southern rock Atlanta based group has won multiple Grammys, sold over 7 million records, and boasts a staggering fourteen #1 radio singles. Yeah, they are kind of a big deal to see live not just in Jackson, but anywhere. You won’t want to miss the Zac Brown Band.

uncle-kracker-600x600

The party keeps rolling with Uncle Kracker playing the Music Under the Tram series (next to Nick Wilson’s). Kracker shot to fame as Kid Rock’s DJ, so it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about having fun and rocking a crowd. Kracker stepped out from behind the turntables, started doing his own thing with vocals and playing guitar, and since put out five studio albums.

With great skiing and great music spring is the perfect time to come to Jackson Hole.
